Mais pourquoi aimons-nous tant les glucides ? Leurs origines sont antérieures à l'agriculture et remontent peut-être même à la fin de l’ère de Néandertal, répond cette équipe de l'Université de Buffalo (UB, New York) et du Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (Connecticut) : le gène de la salive qui digère l'amidon, un glucide complexe composé d'unités de glucose, pourrait s'être dupliqué pour la première fois il y a plus de 800.000 ans.
De très nombreuses études ont mis en lumière l’importance durant la grossesse d’une alimentation saine et équilibrée et d’une bonne santé métabolique. Ainsi, l’alimentation de la mère fait les résultats de grossesse et de santé de l’enfant. Cette équipe de l’Université de Newcastle va beaucoup plus loin en démontrant, dans la revue PLoS Medicine, que les aliments sains, lorsqu’ils sont inabordables ou inaccessibles pour la mère, peuvent mettre sa santé et celle de l’enfant « en danger ».
Cet article de perspective, publié dans le New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) « défend » en effet les protéines végétales et montre même qu’elles sont supérieures aux protéines animales : les dernières études confirment en effet que les plantes contiennent tous les acides aminés essentiels, contrairement à une croyance erronée de longue date. Alors que de nombreuses personnes se tournent désormais vers des régimes à base de plantes, ces données viennent confirmer les avantages des végétaux, pour la santé et contre la mortalité.
Une alimentation saine, notamment raisonnable en sucres est liée à un âge biologique plus jeune, conclut cette équipe de nutritionnistes de Université de Californie – San Francisco (UCSF). Au-delà de réaffirmer l’importance d’une alimentation variée et équilibrée, pauvre en aliments ultra-transformés, la recherche, publiée dans le JAMA Network Open, décrypte un lien entre le fait de suivre un régime alimentaire riche en vitamines et minéraux, en particulier un régime sans excès de sucre ajouté, et un âge biologique plus jeune au niveau cellulaire.
La caféine est une habitude saine pour le cœur, conclut à nouveau, cette équipe de l’Université Sapienza de Rome qui incite même le public à joindre l’utile (la santé cardiovasculaire) à l’agréable (le café et autres boissons riches en caféine). L’étude, publiée dans la revue Rheumatology suggère que la caféine, présente dans le café mais également dans le thé et le cacao, aide activement les cellules progénitrices endothéliales, des cellules impliquées dans le renouvellement de la paroi des vaisseaux sanguins et dans la croissance vasculaire.
Des nucléosides spécifiques, présents dans certains aliments, entravent la réplication des cellules tumorales, révèle cette équipe de biologistes de l’Université d'Osaka. Des travaux publiés dans la revue PLoS ONE qui laissent espérer plus largement, d’autres avantages de ces acides nucléiques alimentaires.
Laitance de saumon, levure, des composés dérivés de leur ADN ont des effets contre la croissance des cellules cancéreuses.
Cette étude, publiée dans la revue Nutrients, lance un signal d'alarme aux parents, aux pédiatres et aux décideurs politiques face aux allégations trompeuses concernant les aliments pour bébés, et, dans la réalité, face à leur composition majoritairement non conforme aux besoins nutritionnels du petit enfant. Ainsi, l’équipe de biologistes et de nutritionnistes du George Institute for Global Health (Sydney) révèle que -sur le marché américain du moins- 60 % des aliments pour nourrissons et tout-petits ne répondent pas aux recommandations nutritionnelles.
Le régime végétarien plus efficace que le régime méditerranéen pour maintenir un poids de santé ou perdre du poids et réduire l’inflammation ? C’est ce que suggère cette équipe d’experts du Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (Washington) qui conseille, dans la revue Frontiers in Nutrition, d’adopter de préférence un régime végétarien à faible teneur en matières grasses.
Ce régime réduit en effet de 73 % les composés alimentaires inflammatoires nocifs appelés produits finaux de glycation avancée (AGE : advanced glycation end-products) de 73 %, par rapport au régime méditerranéen.
Ces endocrinologues et biologistes de la Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health identifient un lien significatif entre le fer héminique, présent dans la viande rouge et d'autres produits d'origine animale, et le risque de diabète de type 2. Leur étude, publiée dans la revue Nature Metabolism, qui montre aussi que le fer non héminique -présent dans les aliments d'origine végétale- n'est pas associé au risque de diabète de type 2.
Déjà documenté comme bénéfique à la longévité en population générale, le régime méditerranéen se révèle particulièrement associé à ce risque plus faible de mortalité, chez les survivants du cancer. Ainsi, l’adhésion à ce régime alimentaire après un diagnostic de cancer est associée à une forte réduction de la mortalité, notamment due aux maladies cardiovasculaires.
